In recent years, due to the rapid development of the fast fashion industry, the speed of clothing renewal is getting faster and faster, so people can easily discard the clothes they don't like and buy new ones. Although these discarded garments will be recovered by some local textile recycling factories and transported to some poor countries like Ghana for secondary sale, the development of fast fashion makes the quality of these second-hand garments unable to be guaranteed, and many poor quality garments will eventually become garbage and be burned at the seaside, causing great harm to the local environment.

Therefore, in this project, I devoted myself to finding various methods and techniques, including cutting, weaving and mixing new materials, and tried to upcycle old T-shirts. The fashion aesthetic helped me create many beautiful products in this project, and finally I photographed these beautiful products and made them into a book. I really hope that this project will attract more people to participate in upcycling clothes and help make the world a better place.

Upcycling T-Shirts

To learn more about where used clothing goes, I visited Chris Carey's Collections Recycling Facility, a textile recycling plant in the UK.

First, I tried to cut T-shirts into thin strips of fabric to make T-shirt yarns, and tried to use knitting technology to make products.

Next, I tried to cut the T-shirt fabric into thicker strips, and combined with the thin thread to make new fabric-using the weaving technique.

Then, I tried to combine T-shirt thread with resin material to make new products.

In order to achieve 100% recycling, I tried to sew the cut out T-shirt seams together to try to make some fashion items.

Finally, I took beautiful photos of these products and made them into a photography book.
